Barndominiums, or barndos, are becoming a popular living option for homeowners that are interested in open concept living with volume spaces and energy efficient living.
A barndominium is a metal building that has been converted into a living space, or built from scratch from a metal building kit. Metal building construction can be a DIY project, with experience, or the homeowner can hire a contractor to erect the metal building structure and subcontract out the different trades for finishing the interior spaces.
One of the main appeals of barndos is low cost of construction compared to stick-built houses with current estimates of $40-50 per square foot for construction vs. $200-$400+ per square foot for traditionally built homes.
Closed -cell spray foam is the ideal insulation option for a barndominium because it is supremely effective and durable. Because the foam marries itself to the structure it eliminates condensation and provides for improved insulating performance over other types of traditional insulation. Its energy efficiency and suitability for metal buildings make it the preferred insulation choice for eco-conscious homeowners.

What is a barndominium?
Barndominium is a neologistic portmanteau of barn and condominium with multiple meanings.
One definition refers to a type of steel building. This usage refers to a non-traditional structure, with a steel frame and sheet metal siding, originally designed as a storage building or barn structure that has been repurposed by the addition of living areas to previously open space. This type of building is typically built on an existing property or multi-acre homesite and the structure often acts as a dual purpose living and shop or work and storage areas large enough for things as large as boats and recreational vehicles.
The term has also been used for wood-framed structures, and is often used interchangeably with terms like “barn home” and “barn with living quarters”, for newer buildings in the tradition of bastles, housebarns and connected farms.
